Overview

Traces, Maps and the social sphere in public space:

We are social creatures and communication is key to our existence, this workshop will examine forms of communication on and offline.

This will be a 2.5 hour workshop which will take place in the streets of Toronto. Workshoppers will be briefed on sociological research/philosophy; Jacob Moreno, Stanley Milgram, Situationist International and Vito Acconci. Research methods developed by the a fore mentioned will be practiced in groups in public space. Workshoppers will be given tools and directed to classify, map, augment and observe people in public space.

When creating online community tools, it is useful to understand how human’s interact in the real world. This 2.5 hour workshop will reveal systems of human interaction which will benefit anyone interested in creating an online community tools. With the rise in mobile computing devices, it is ever more important to think about how people interface with each other in public space. It is possible to design digital systems that provide a social context for our activities!
