Intersection = needs + requirements
Even when we are taking a user-centric approach to product design, business needs and requirements influence design and technology decisions. We work to optimize sometimes conflicting needs from people, technology, and business. We strive to minimize time, effort, and cost while maximizing value to both people and the business. We try to innovate, compete, and launch quickly without sacrificing quality. It is a dance of balance.
But designers work on many different types of products with different strategies and goals: e-commerce, social media, enterprise productivity tools, entertainment, finance, and more. The dance of balance is different for each.
Are there common guiding principles we share, regardless of product type? How do our product goals differ? How do the product differences influence design, technology, and business decisions?
Let’s discuss.
