Innovations in display technologies continuously and rapidly evolve, growing larger and wider, immersing us with digital information everywhere from our homes to offices, public spaces and vehicles.

We are holding “doors” to this new universe in our hands. We put them on our tables and walls, and we see them when we look up while walking in a city or entering the lobby of a building.

Soon, the prevalence of these two-dimensional interfaces will transition to an explosion of three-dimensional spatial experiences, a hybrid reality at the intersection of digital and physical realities. Rather than surfing through the “pages,” we will navigate through “spaces”. This conceptual change will literally take human creativity into “new dimensions”.

Digital tools enable the presentation of artistic productions to their audiences more directly and in real time than ever before. With social networks, we expose our minds to an endless stream of visual media every day that consciously or subconsciously shapes our choices, desires and dreams. Each of us curates our own reality through our digital interactions. Electronic media, as well as the physical environment we live in, have a real impact on our inner world.

An exciting responsibility falls on artists and designers, as well as technologists in the construction of a new universe. Instead of digitizing a carbon copy of the physical world, we have the chance to transform it — different possibilities with eye-opening new aesthetic sensibilities.

In his new keynote “New Dimensions: The Doors of Metaverse,” Visual Artist Can Büyükberber talks about how the change brought about by technology affects production processes, creativity and aesthetics in today’s media art landscape.
