Occasionally, a project comes along that requires a bit of R&D. Or a lot of it. Sometimes the project is so R&D heavy we dare call it experimental. Does an experimental project get scoped, managed and produced differently than conventional projects? Obviously. And by that token, no matter how versatile your favourite tools are, sometimes only a custom tool can suit your custom needs. When does a technical or creative problem justify its own tool? In a case study of the Denon Visyoualizer, we’ll examine the tools we wrote, and explain why it was worth the trouble. We’ll also discuss how toolmaking fits into our business model as creative service providers.
